Mom had had other puppies at home before me, so she knew that no matter if it's a dog, a rabbit, a cat or a human, infants require adaptation to the environment, and they must be consistently observed to help them to adapt and relate with the environment.
One afternoon, mom was ready to cook, so she took my cradle to the kitchen, she turned on the blender, and while it was working, she thought that maybe the noise would scared me, but I did not react!... mom turned on the blender again, thinking that maybe it was not a strong noise, but I did not woke up ... she began to suspect I was deaf, so using her knowledge of neurodevelopment, she made several tests to try to know my level of audition.
She took me to the vet next morning. Doctor, was a young man, who looked upset, but he treated me very well. Mom asked him a complete check up and begins my immunization protocol. He squeezed me and took my temperature, he saw my eyes and my ears… and mom dropped a comment in a casual way, saying she suspected I was deaf, and added a comment to the phrase: "as if that is possible in a dog."
The vet looked at her and said that 1 in every 3000 dogs born deaf, and usually they did not live long.
He continued squeezing me and trying to not ignore something… mom asked him why deaf dogs did not have a long live. He explained that causes are not directly related to deafness, but because of a tendency to accidents; these dogs or cats usually go out and finish their lives under a wheel or attacked by dogs since they are not able to predict danger, so life expectancy does not exceed the year.
Mom didn’t say much more, she scheduled my shots and took me home. She told to grandma what the vet said, they agreed to teach me to walk on a leash and that the only way I could go out was if someone could be with me.
Some days after, mom took me to a human clinical and some doctors made me a test called BAER, the specialist told my mom I could hear low bass tones, but I was medically deaf.
When we got back home, mom fed me and when I was done she hugged me, she told me that it was not important what I was, but what I would be able to do. That afternoon she took me to buy my leash, it was a thin leather leash with paws and my necklace was the smallest in the store ... So I began learning ... with Mom telling me how to walk, and I learned very quickly!. The first lessons were I should never go out alone, I could not run beyond the extension of my leash and I should not cross the street without looking around twice.
In addition to my leash, I owe my relationship with the world to the fact I have not been discriminated ever or treated in a special way, I am deaf, but before that I am Bubu and I adopted my place in the world, people recognize me by my black ear and my puppy look ... that's me!.
